The sisters' aging father believes that the game of mahjong is a simile for life. To be a strong mahjong player is to be a person of incredible strength: physically, mentally, and emotionally. He believes that only an expert mahjong player is worthy of taking one of his daughter's hands in marriage, yet he's saddened by the fact that he's found only one such person thus far, although this player has not shown as much interest in marrying his daughters as he had hoped.

Folowing his championship career, he established a large chain of mahjong gaming halls, but now several of those have reverted to independent ownership. What remains is to be gifted to his future son-in-law.
