In the SIRP, he is a transfer student sent by SEELE to spy on NERV, while in the Girlfriend of Steel 2, he is an old friend of Shinji, though more of his past is shrouded in mystery.

 Secretly, Kaworu is the 17th Angel, born during the 2nd Impact. Under SEELE's command, he breaks into Terminal Dogma in order to return to Adam, but after he discovers the being there is actually Lilith, he allows Shinji to destroy him. /
